Energy Star Appliances
Michael Gonzalez, mg2359@columbia.edu
Senior Contracts Officer, Purchasing
As appliances are replaced in the University’s 6,200 off-campus apartments, the new ones bear the ENERGY STAR logo and carry the EnergyGuide label. This means that the appliances – mostly refrigerators – meet the energy efficiency standards set by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy. These appliances use 10 to 50 percent less energy and water than other models. The EnergyGuide label estimates the amount of energy the appliance will use and its cost compared with a similar non-Energy Star appliance.
The CUMC labs are required to buy ENERGY STAR products. A cost analysis will be completed in the 2007 academic year to determine whether the Morningside campus will have a similar policy.
