Intercampus Shuttle Bus Service
Emmanuel Durham, ed2221@columbia.edu
Assistant Director for Transportation, Administrative Services
Concern for energy efficiency is a big part of the bus service that keeps Columbia University students, faculty and staff on the move among the Morningside, Medical Center and Harlem Hospital campuses.
The loop is serviced by a Daimler-Chrysler SLF-230 bus that holds 48 passengers and is constructed of low-weight materials. This translates to diesel fuel usage of approximately 11 miles per gallon, in contrast to a heavy duty bus that gets about 4-6 miles per gallon.
Operated by Golden Touch Transportation, the bus makes a continuous run among the three campuses, covering 190 miles a day from September through May, and 160 miles a day during June, July and August.
Golden Touch conventional buses also cover the two other University routes: the Lamont-Doherty shuttle that makes 12 trips a day between 119th St. and Amsterdam Ave. and the Lamont-Doherty campus in Palisades, N.Y., and the Port Authority bus that runs from the Medical Center to the Port Authority Terminal at the George Washington Bridge.
